Blue Mountain Observatory, University of Montana

PI: Dr. David Friend, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Montana

Space Grant funding has allowed for the refurbishment of the Blue Mountain Observatory at the University of Montana. This observatory is the only research observatory in the state. Space Grant funding has allowed the purchase of a modern CCD camera for the observatory, a STARLAB planetarium for educational use at the University and in schools in surrounding communities, and, most recently, a dedicated four-wheel drive vehicle for access to the observatory.
Outcomes:
  • Five invited talks or posters presented on research and educational use of the observatory
  • PI received a NASA JOVE grant for 1991-93
  • Seven students hired for summer research work at the observatory (one Native American)
  • Open houses at the observatory have been attended by over 1500 people
