A Cosmic Ray Spark Chamber for Astronomy Education and Public Display

PI: John W. Belz, Department of Physics, The University of Montana

The P.I. will develop and deploy a demonstration-quality cosmic ray spark chamber. This device will graphically and dramatically depict to the general public the ubiquity of cosmic radiation, and also serve to illustrate modern radiation detection techniques. Further, it will serve as a lead-in to a wide variety of astrophysical and radiation science topics. The Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University will serve as the permanent home and display location of this spark chamber, which will also be semi-portable for demonstrations in local schools and astronomy classrooms.
