New Course Offering in Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing

PI: Dr. Thomas Moon, Department of Geophysical Engineering, Montana Tech

The Department of Geophysical Engineering at Montana Tech will offer a new course in remote sensing and will, in conjunction, establish a digital image processing lab. Space grant is supplying support for course development, including computer lab equipment and digital image processing software. The PI has submitted an additional proposal to the NASA JOVE program which is now under review.

Outcomes:

A new course on remote sensing and digital image processing was developed at Montana Tech. It is a course on the principles of remote sensing which include the satellite and airborne platforms presently in use, the digital image processing techniques used to display, enhance and classify images, and the interpretation of multi- and hyper-spectral images. In addition, the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and artificial neural networks in remote sensing is explored. Radar, Landsat and AVIRIS scenes are analyzed, along with some lunar and planetary images.
